Trip Details

Upper Mustang Trek leads through many traditional Mustang, Thakali and Gurung villages, famous for hundreds of years Trans Himalayan Nepal and Tibet salt trade route. Upper Mustang is rated as one of the best cultural and classic trekking destination in Nepal, for its unique ancient traditions and way of life as it was from many centuries.

Mustang is a place where natural beauty, wildlife, history, unique ancient traditions and culture co-exist in timeless harmony. Mustang is one of the most beautiful and varied district in Nepal. The southern border reaches down into the middle hills near Pokhara while the northern half stretches up through the Himalayan ranges on to the Tibetan plateau. The Kali Gandaki River flows beneath lofty snow – clad peaks creating a stunning landscape.

This remarkable trek starts from Jomsom of Mustang and then over to higher Mustang region via the high pass at 3,950 m of Lho La pass and 3,810 m at Dhakmar, one of the highest point of this trek and slowly with a scenic walk ending this beautiful and awesome trekking at Jomsom and then fly to Pokhara city.

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft above sea level), transfer to hotel

Welcome to Nepal Himalaya, we meet in Kathmandu airport and will be transferred to your hotel. Ace Hiking offers welcome dinner in authentic Nepalese restaurant. Overnight at hotel, dinner included.

Day 2Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (820 m / 2,690 ft) 6-7 hours

Pokhara is a beautiful touristic city with Mountain View. We will take tourist bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara for 7 hours. Overnight at hotel, breakfast included.

Day 3Morning Flight to Jomsom 2,700 m and trek to Kagbeni - 4 hrs

An early in the morning, we fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, the flight takes only 22 mins with mind blowing views of Annapurna, Manaslu and Dhaulagiri range of mountains. Jomsom is a large town and a headquarter of Mustang district.
First day walk of this fabulous journey starts from Jomsom along the Kali Gandaki river valley, after four hours of good hiking on this windy valley reaching at Kagbeni village. Kagbeni village is the gateway to Forbidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang.

Day 4Trek to Tsele 3,050 m - 6 hrs

From Kagbeni morning walk continues with an uphill gorge following Kali Gandaki river, with awesome landscapes scenery with red cliffs on both side of the gorge, passing few villages and hamlets coming to a nice cultivated farm land at Tirigaon village, looking over an interesting and picturesque cliff canyon of red colored erosion, continue trek on this windswept valley for another few hours reaching at Tsele (or Chele) village for overnight stop. Tsele is quite a large village located by the Kali Gandaki valley.

Day 5Trek to Geling 3,540 m - 5 hrs

After a overnight at Tsele village, our journey continues with a climb to Gyakar village and the wide barren terrain to reach at Samar village. After a ice stop continue walk towards a small settlement of Bhena, and then leading to a steep uphill to Yamda La top at 3,860 meters a small pass, offering glorious views of Mustang wide valley including high peaks with Mt. Dhaulagiri mountain range. After an enjoyable stop with the striking views, descend all the way through Syangboche village to Geling village for overnight.

Day 6Trek to Tsarang 3,560 m - 6 hrs

In the morning we visit old Geling monastery, an interesting old monastery of Geling. After a quick tour, morning walk leads to cross over Ghaymi Khola (stream) and then following a long row of interesting Mani walls (holy prayer stone) and reaching at Dhakmar village, after a short rest here couple of hours of god walk brings at overnight stop at Tsarang village. We visit another monastery in Tsarang village.

Day 7Trek to Lho-Manthang 3,700 m - 4 hrs

This day, trail leads to our main highlight and to our destination reaching the higher side of Upper Mustang at Lho Manthang. A half day walk to Lho Manthang for lunch and overnights, the pleasant morning walk follows a gentle path and then crossing a steel bridge to reach at Marang village. Tsarang and Lho Manthang, offering amazing views of windswept terrain landscapes and of true Tibetan plateau with super panorama of Nilgiri’s, Tilicho and Bhrikuti mountains, after a wonderful moment walk leads to a climb at Lo La pass 3,950 meters elevation and looking below views of Lo Manthang walled city with its fortress. And then downhill an hour walk reaches inside a mystical, medieval walled city of Lho Manthang for two nights stop.

Day 8In Lho Manthang for local hike and tour

An exciting place for rest and free day of this wonderful journey as well. After breakfast, explore the important places if the king of Mustang is around worth to visit the palace like fort, Tibetan style houses and way of life. We visit amazing four major monasteries; the Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the great Entrance Hall.

Day 9Trek to Dhakmar 3,810 m - 6 hrs

From Lho Manthang heading back to Jomsom using an old trekking route passing several farm houses, tended fields and poplar trees. A few hours hiking to Marang village and then following old walking trail leads to our overnight stop at Dhakmar village.

Day 10Trek to Ghiling 3,806 m - 6 hrs

After Dhakmar village, starting the morning trekking retracing the same path back to Ghiling village for overnight stop, crossing a bridge over Ghami Khola to Ghami village with visit Geling monastery on route.

Day 11Trek to Tsusang 2,980 m - 6 hrs

Morning walk begins with gradual uphill to Syangboche village, from here couple of hours walk brings at Yamda La after catching the wonderful views of surrounding hills and valleys, then downhill to Bhena and Samar villages, and then following a stream leading through Gyakar and Chele villages and completing the day walk at Tsusang village.

Day 12Trek to Jomsom 2,715 m - 6 hrs

From Tsusang village walk comes to an end of this wonderful trip, today’s walk is quite long so enjoy the final day walk to Jomsom town which leads to a gentle downhill and then following several villages to reach at Kagbeni village, after a stop here for while another 3 hours of good walk on the valley floor brings at Jomsom and the end of the long walk of this amazing trips, in Jomsom in the comfort of nice and good lodges and enjoy the party with fellow members and staffs with apple products of Mustang area, as Jomsom, Kagbeni to Marpha famous for apples and its products.

Day 13Fly to Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) 6-7 hours

Today in the morning we flyfrom Jomsom to Pokhara and then fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Ace Hiking offers farewell dinner in authentic Nepalese restaurant. Overnight at hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 14Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing

Kathmandu valley sightseeing tour will start after breakfast. We will visit four UNESCO world heritage sites. Heritage site tour includes the Pashupatinath temple, Boudha Stupa, Swoyambhu stupa and Kathmandu Durbar Square. You will get opportunity to obsearve historical, religious and cultural aspect of Nepal. You will also see Nepalese architecture containing palaces, buildings, temples, Stupas, carving, mason and metal work. Overnight at hotel, breakfast included.

Day 15Departure to international airport

Today you grab last minute shopping or other activities. We will drop you at the Kathmandu international airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight. We will say goodbye with happy memories and hoping to see you again. Breakfast included.
