The Annapurna Circuit Trek, also known as the Thorong La Pass Trek (5,416 m / 17,769 ft), is a captivating and diverse route in Nepal. It offers a splendid opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant local communities, rich religious traditions, and the awe-inspiring views of the snow-clad Annapurna Himalaya.

What sets the Annapurna region apart is its remarkable diversity, both in terms of its people and geography. Along the trek, we will traverse numerous ancient villages, allowing us to experience the daily lives, traditions, and culture of the local inhabitants. Throughout the journey, we will encounter Buddhist monuments, prayer flags, Stupas, Chortens, Monasteries, temples, prayer wheels, and memorial sites, offering a glimpse into the rich spiritual heritage of the region.

Our trek commences in the lower valley of the Marshyangdi River, gradually ascending to the awe-inspiring Thorong-la Pass at an elevation of 5,416 m. After crossing the pass, we will embark on a comparatively faster descent along the scenic Kaligandaki River Valley. Along the way, we will pass through enchanting villages such as Muktinath, Jomsom, Marpha, and many more. Muktinath, in particular, holds great significance as a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Throughout the journey, the ever-changing mountain and valley vistas will leave you spellbound. The Annapurna Circuit Trek takes you from the verdant terraces and diverse vegetation of the Marsyangdi valley to the contrasting landscapes of the rain shadow region in the Himalayas.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) and transfer to hotel:

Welcome to Nepal Himalaya! We will meet you at Kathmandu airport and transfer you to your hotel. Ace Hiking offers a welcome dinner at an authentic Nepalese restaurant.

Day 2Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing:

The Kathmandu Valley sightseeing tour will start after breakfast. We will visit four UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Pashupatinath temple, Boudha Stupa, Swoyambhu Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. This tour provides an opportunity to observe the historical, religious, and cultural aspects of Nepal. You will also get to see Nepalese architecture, including palaces, buildings, temples, stupas, and intricate wood and metal work.

Day 3Drive from Kathmandu to Beshisahar (850 m / 2,790 ft) and drive to Jagat (1,300m / 4,265ft), 8-9 hours:

After breakfast at hotel, we will drive to Beshisahar and again drive to Jagat. The road is good until Beshisahar, after Besisahar the road is rough bumpy and dusty.

Day 4Trek from Jagat to Dharapani (1,860 m / 6,102 ft), 5-6 hours:

We will cross the Marshyandi River near Chamje village, crossing several bridges along the way. Our journey will take us through Tal village, Karte and Dharapani.

Day 5Dharapani to Chame (2,670 m / 8,760 ft), 5-6 hours:

We will begin our ascent from Danaqu to the charming village of Timang, offering beautiful views of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m). From Timang, the trail continues straight, with a slight descent and short uphill section leading to Koto, the gateway to the Nar-Phu Valley trek. After approximately 45 minutes, we will reach Chame, a bustling village and the district headquarters of Manang district.

Day 6Chame to Pisang (3,200 m / 10,490 ft), 5-6 hours:

We will start the day by crossing the Marshyandi River via a suspension bridge. Along the way, we will enjoy magnificent views of Lamjung Himal and the lower ridge of Annapurna II. Passing a long Mane wall and Bratang village, we will reach Dhikur Pokhari (lake) and eventually Pisang village.

Day 7Pisang to Manang (3,540 m / 11,615 ft), 6-7 hours:

Today, we will take a scenic route to Manang, passing through the picturesque villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal. These ancient villages boast traditional structures and offer panoramic views of Annapurna and Gangapurna. Manang is a large village with well-facilitated lodges and restaurants.

Day 8Acclimatization day:

Today is dedicated to acclimatization in preparation for the challenging Thorong-la Pass at 5,416 meters. We will explore the surroundings of Manang and enjoy a day trip in the area.

Day 9Manang to Yak Kharka (4,050 m / 13,280 ft), 3-4 hours:

The trail ascends to Tanki village, which marks the last village before reaching the top of Thorong-la Pass. From Tanki, the path gradually becomes flat as we make our way to Yak Kharka, a pastureland for yaks. We will have the opportunity to see many yaks along the way.

Day 10Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,450 m / 14,590 ft), 3-4 hours:

The trail continues with a slight ascent to Ledar. Beyond Ledar, the path mostly remains straight with some short descents and ascents. If we’re lucky, we may catch a glimpse of wild animals like the Blue Sheep. We will reach Thorong Phedi or Thorong Base Camp, where we will have lunch and spend the night. Overnight accommodation will be provided at a guesthouse, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 11Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) via Thorong La Pass (5,416 m / 17,780 ft), 7-8 hours:

Today is a challenging and lengthy day of the trek. We will begin early in the morning, equipped with headlamps. The trail starts with a steep ascent for about an hour to High Camp, followed by a gradual ascent towards Thorong La Pass. It takes approximately 4 hours to reach Thorong La Pass top from Thorong Phedi (4,550 meters) at 5,416 meters. Upon reaching the pass, we will take some photographs and then embark on a 4-hour descent to Muktinath.

Day 12Muktinath to Jomsom (2,720 m / 8,924 ft), 5-6 hours:

Today’s trek mostly follows the road, where vehicles frequently pass by. Along the way, we will visit the beautiful and historic Kagbeni. The trail is windy as we continue along the Kaligandaki River. Jomsom is a significant village and serves as the administrative center of the Mustang district.

We will take a bus or jeep from Jomsom to Pokhara. The journey along the rough and bumpy road offers a unique experience.

Day 14Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft):

In the morning, we will board a tourist bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Alternative: Alternatively, one can explore Pokhara in the morning and arrange for a private vehicle to Kathmandu. Private vehicle cost not included.

Day 15Departure to international airport

Today, you have the opportunity for last-minute shopping or engaging in other activities in Kathmandu. We will drop you off at the Kathmandu International Airport three hours before your scheduled flight, bidding you farewell with happy memories and hoping to see you again.

Annapurna Circuit Trek difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit trek is considered a moderate trek, and it does not require any prior training, experience, or mountaineering skills. However, being physically fit and having some hiking experience can make the trek more enjoyable. It’s important to maintain a steady pace and gradually gain altitude as we walk along the trail.
